Frequently Asked Questions

General
Where are Softoppers manufactured?

Softoppers are designed and manufactured in North America. The fabric is made in the USA and as many materials as possible are purchased in the USA.

Can the Softopper handle high winds? Can you drive the Softopper on the highway?

Yes. Softoppers easily handle the same winds and driving speeds as a hard top.

Is the Softopper durable? How long will it last?

Softopper is built with premium materials and a focus on longevity. Its combination of durable fabric, rust-proof aluminum frame, and replaceable parts makes it an investment that will keep your truck bed protected and looking great for years to come:

Fabric:

  • Premier Convertible Fabric: We use the same high-quality, automotive-grade convertible fabric trusted by major automakers like Jeep, Ford, and Chrysler.
  • Woven Construction with PVC Coating: This specialized woven fabric is coated with a UV-stabilized PVC layer, making it exceptionally water-resistant and resilient against the elements.
  • Proven Performance: This fabric has been rigorously tested and proven to withstand wind, rain, sunlight, fading, mildew, and rot. It’s designed to stay beautiful and functional for years to come.

Framework:

  • Rust-Proof Aluminum: The Softopper’s framework is constructed from lightweight, rust-proof aluminum. This ensures a strong and sturdy structure that can handle the rigors of outdoor use without succumbing to corrosion.

Replaceable & Serviceable:

  • Individual Parts: A key advantage of the Softopper is that all its components – from the fabric to the frame parts – are individually replaceable and serviceable.
  • Longevity: This means that if any part of your Softopper experiences wear and tear or accidental damage, you can replace just that specific part instead of the entire unit. This extends the lifespan of your Softopper significantly, potentially allowing it to last as long as your vehicle itself.
Can the Softopper carry a load on top?

No, the Softopper’s frame is designed to fold down. A load above the cab height will catch the wind, and fold the top down.

Can the Softopper handle snow loads?

Yes, absolutely. The Softopper is engineered to withstand a variety of weather conditions, including snow loads. There’s no reason to remove your topper in the winter; it’s designed for year-round use.

Does the fabric shrink or stretch?

When you initially install your Softopper, it may be quite tight. It will stretch out over the first few weeks and find its happy place. After that it shouldn’t stretch anymore. In cold weather you may notice it’s a little tighter to put on, but not a problem.

Can you put a canoe or kayak on top of the Softopper?

No, we strongly advise against placing a canoe or kayak directly on top of the Softopper frame. It’s not designed to support that kind of weight or shape, and doing so could damage both the Softopper and your items. However, we offer an optional roof rack that’s specifically designed to safely transport items like canoes and kayaks. You can see our Datin rack and other compatible racks HERE. You can also inquire via phone, chat, or email for more information about our roof rack options for your specific needs.

Installation
How do I measure the length of my truck bed correctly to ensure I order the right top?

*PLEASE MAKE SURE TO MEASURE BEFORE PLACING AN ORDER TO AVOID ANY UNNECESSARY DELAYS OR RETURNS*

Accurately measuring your truck bed is crucial to ensure a perfect fit for your Softopper. Here’s how to do it:

1. Gather Your Tools:

  • Measuring tape: A flexible measuring tape that can reach the full length of your truck bed.
  • Notebook and pen: To record your measurements.

2. Prepare Your Truck Bed:

  • Clear the bed: Remove any cargo, tools, or accessories from the truck bed.
  • Ensure the tailgate is closed: The tailgate should be fully closed and latched.

3. Take the Measurement:

  • Locate the front of the bed: Stand at the back of your truck, facing the cab. The front of the bed is the wall that separates the cab from the truck bed.
  • Measure from the inside: Place the end of your measuring tape at the top against the inside of the front wall of the truck bed.
  • Extend to the tailgate: Carefully extend the measuring tape from the front or bulkhead of the truck bed until it reaches the top of the inside of the tailgate.
  • Read and record: Read the measurement at the point where the tape touches the inside of the tailgate. Record this measurement in inches. This is the length of your truck bed.

Important Considerations:

  • Measure twice: It’s always a good idea to double-check your measurement to ensure accuracy.
  • Consult our website: Refer to our website or contact our customer support team if you have any questions about measuring or choosing the right size Softopper for your truck.

Key Points to Emphasize:

  • Inside measurement: It’s crucial to measure from the inside of the front wall to the inside of the tailgate.
  • Tailgate closed: The tailgate must be fully closed and latched when measuring.
  • Accuracy matters: An accurate measurement is essential for a proper fit and optimal performance of your Softopper.

We also have a video showing you the best way to measure your bed: https://softopper.com/how-to-measure-bed-length/

By following these simple steps, you can confidently measure your truck bed and ensure you order the right Softopper for a perfect fit and enjoyable outdoor adventures.

*REMEMBER TO MEASURE! PLEASE MEASURE YOUR TRUCK BED SIZE FROM BULKHEAD TO TAILGATE (INSIDE).*

Will my Softopper include all the parts necessary to install it right when I get it?

Absolutely! Your Softopper will arrive with all the necessary components for a complete installation. This includes the frame, fabric top, all required mounting hardware, and detailed instructions. We’ve designed our kits to be comprehensive, so you can get your Softopper up and running without any delays.

How is the Softopper installed?

The Softopper sets up quickly and easily. Installing it the first time is not much different than installing the 20th time.

  • The Softopper’s side rails clamp to the top of the truck’s bed rails.
  • The upper structure pins to the side rails.
  • The canvas snaps, buckles, and ties to the frame.
  • The front panel is two parts. The outer panel goes between the cab and the bed so rain sheds outside the truck.
  • The inner panel hook fastens to the inside of the cab rail.
  • The rear panel hook fastens to the top of the tailgate.
  • Jeep and SUV tops are installed in a number of ways depending upon the vehicle.
  • See full installation process for your vehicle Here.
How long does it take to install a Softopper?

Most people seem to take about 45 – 60 minutes to do the initial install. It’s not difficult at all and usually only requires a wrench or socket to tighten the clamps.

How long does it take to re-install the Softopper to my truck?

If you leave the frame together and the canopy on the frame, it takes about 2 minutes to put it back on the truck.

Does Softopper offer installation service?

We do on select products, yes! Click here to visit our Home Installation page for more details.

Can I install a Softopper on a truck that has an over the rail toolbox?

The Softopper bedrails need to sit flat on the top of the truck’s bedrail. Tool boxes that hang up and over each side of the bed will have to be removed.

Tool boxes that sit down on the floor of the bed and have at least 2 inches of space between the edge of the bed and the tool box are usually fine.

Can I install a Softopper on a truck that has an over the rail bed liner?

Yes, you can absolutely install a Softopper on a truck with an over-the-rail bed liner. However, there’s an important step to ensure a secure fit:

Modifications to the Bed Liner:

  • Drilling: You’ll need to use a hole saw to carefully cut through the bed liner at specific points where the Softopper’s clamps attach to the truck bed rails.
  • Number of Holes:
    • Standard Beds: Two holes on each side of the truck bed.
    • Super-Dutys and 8-foot beds: Three holes on each side of the truck bed.

Why is this necessary?

  • Secure Attachment: The Softopper’s clamps need to make direct contact with the metal truck bed rails for a strong and secure attachment.
  • Prevent Damage: Drilling through the bed liner prevents the clamps from putting undue pressure on the liner, which could lead to cracks or warping.

Tips for Drilling:

  • Measure Carefully: Use the Softopper’s provided template or instructions to mark the exact locations for the holes.
  • Choose the Right Hole Saw Size: Select a hole saw size that matches the diameter of the Softopper’s clamps.
  • Use Caution: Take your time and drill carefully to avoid damaging the truck bed or the bed liner beyond the necessary holes.

Additional Considerations:

  • Professional Installation: If you’re not comfortable making these modifications yourself, consider having a professional installer handle it for you.
  • Bed Liner Material: The specific drilling process may vary slightly depending on the material of your bed liner. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to our customer support team for guidance.

Yes. The material is a coated automotive convertible fabric that’s completely waterproof.

Any water that falls on your Softopper sheds outside the truck.

As with any sewn top there is a small possibility of the seams leaking. Softopper offers seam sealer if you would like to treat any trouble spots.

Does the Softopper flap in the wind? Is the Softopper loud?

No. The Softopper frame holds the canvas tight.

Care and Maintenance
Can I drive the Softopper through a Car Wash?

You can go through a touchless car wash. We recommend that you rinse any residual waxes or cleaning agents from the windows afterward. Cleaning agents containing alcohol, silicone, or wax will degrade the Softopper windows over time.

What is the best way to care for my Softopper?

We appreciate your investment in a Softopper and want to ensure it provides years of enjoyment. Proper care is essential for maximizing its lifespan and appearance. Here’s a breakdown of the best practices:

Regular Cleaning:

  • Exterior: Wash the exterior of your Softopper at least once a month with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh detergents or abrasive cleaners that can damage the fabric. Rinse thoroughly and allow it to air dry completely.
  • Interior: Vacuum the interior regularly to remove dust, dirt, and debris. Use a damp cloth to wipe down any hard surfaces.

Deep Cleaning:

  • Twice a Year: We recommend a deeper cleaning at least twice a year, or more frequently depending on your environment and usage. Use a specialized fabric cleaner designed for marine-grade vinyl or canvas. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Stain Removal:

  • Address Stains Promptly: The sooner you address a stain, the better your chances of successful removal. Blot spills immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth.
  • Specific Stain Types: Different stains require different treatment approaches. If you encounter a stubborn stain, contact our customer support team for specific advice.

Weather Protection:

  • UV Protection: When not in use, consider covering your Softopper with a UV-resistant cover to protect it from the sun’s harmful rays.
  • Winter Storage: If you live in a region with harsh winters, it’s advisable to remove your Softopper and store it indoors during the winter months to prevent snow and ice buildup.

Additional Tips:

  • Inspect Regularly: Regularly inspect the seams, zippers, and windows for any signs of wear and tear. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.
  • Avoid Abrasives: Don’t use abrasive brushes or harsh chemicals when cleaning your Softopper.
  • Lubricate Zippers: Periodically lubricate the zippers with a silicone-based lubricant to ensure smooth operation.
  • Air Dry Completely: Always allow your Softopper to air dry completely after cleaning or exposure to moisture to prevent mildew and mold growth.
