Frequently Asked Questions

General
Where are Softoppers manufactured?

Softoppers are manufactured in Boulder, Colorado. The fabric is made in the USA and the canopies are cut and sewn right in Boulder. As many materials as possible are purchased in the USA.

Will my Softopper include all the parts necessary to install it right when I get it?

Yes. All of our products come with everything you need.

Is the Softopper waterproof?

Yes. Any water that falls on the Softopper sheds to the outside of the truck.
The material is a coated automotive convertible fabric and it is completely waterproof.
As with any sewn top, there is a slight possibly of the seam leaking. Softopper supplies seam sealer with every top so you can treat any trouble spots.

Does the Softopper flap in the wind? Is the Softopper loud?

No. The Softopper’s frame holds the canvas tight.

Can the Softopper handle high winds? Can you drive the Softopper on the highway?

Yes. Softoppers easily handle the same winds and driving speeds as a hard top.

Can the Softopper handle snow loads?

Yes. There is no reason to remove your topper in winter.

Is the Softopper durable? How long will it last?

The fabric is a premier, automotive convertible fabric, which consists of a woven fabric with a UV stabilized PVC coating for water resistance. It’s the chosen fabric for convertibles used by major OEM convertible manufacturers such as Jeep, Ford and Chrysler. It’s been proven against, wind, rain, sunlight, fading, mildew and rot, and remains beautiful for years.

The framework is made of rust-proof aluminum.

All parts of the Softopper are individually replaceable and serviceable, so your top lasts as long as the vehicle.

Can the Softopper carry a load on top?

No, the Softopper’s frame is designed to fold down. A load above the cab height will catch the wind, and fold the top down.

Can I install a Softopper on a truck that has an over the rail bed liner?

Yes, however you will need to use a hole saw to cut through the bed liner so that the clamps will attach properly.

Two holes on each side for standard beds, 3 holes on each side for Super-Dutys and 8-foot beds.

Can I install a Softopper on a truck that has an over the rail toolbox?

The Softopper bedrails need to sit flat on the top of the truck’s bedrail. Tool boxes that hang up and over each side of the bed will have to be removed.

Tool boxes that sit down on the floor of the bed and have at least 2 inches of space between the edge of the bed and the tool box are usually fine.

Does the fabric shrink or stretch?

When you initially install your Softopper, it may be quite tight. It will stretch out over the first few days and find its happy place. After that it shouldn’t stretch anymore. In cold weather you may notice it’s a little tighter to put on, but not a problem.

Can you put a canoe or kayak on top of the Softopper?

No, the Softopper frame is not designed to have any object put directly on it. Please ask about our optional rack for that purpose.

What if I break the frame or damage the cover?

Replacement parts are available and repairs can be completed.

Shop for replacement parts on our website, or contact us with specific repair questions.

Can I drive the Softopper through a Car Wash?

You can go through a touchless car wash. We recommend you rinse any residual waxes or cleaning agents from the windows afterwards. Any cleaning agents containing alcohol, silicone or wax will degrade the Softopper windows over time.

  • The inner panel Velcros to the inside of the cab rail.

What is the Softopper Warranty?

We warrant our Softopper products to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one year, with the exception of vinyl windows and zippers, provided there has been normal use and proper maintenance.

Vinyl Windows are warranted for a period of 3 months from the date of purchase.

Zippers are guaranteed to be in perfect working condition when leaving the factory. Due to atmospheric conditions, dirt, sand, road grime, dust, and abrasive cleaners, etc., zippers are warranted for a period of 6 months from the date of purchase.

Toyota 4Runner, Blazer, Jimmy, Scout, Bronco, Ramcharger and Trailduster side curtain windows are warranted for 45 days from the date of purchase.  Retracting or closing the top when the temperature is below 40 degrees may void the warranty on the side windows, as the window material can crack very easily at these temperatures.  Use caution when retracting the top or cleaning off the windows in freezing temperatures.
